Smoking can cause:

  • Cancer
  • Emphysema
  • Heart disease
  • Asthma
  • Physical changes such as bad breath, premature wrinkles and stained teeth

Secondhand smoke can also have a negative effect on your body so avoid exposure whenever possible. Cigarette smoke of any type can cause:

  • Frequent and severe asthma attacks
  • Respiratory infections such as pneumonia or bronchitis
  • Respiratory symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, wheezing and shortness of breath
  • Ear infections
  • Slower brain development during adolescence
  • Low birth weight in infants
  • A greater risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
