Help fight health care fraud and abuse

Health care resources should be used to meet the actual health needs of members. When they are not, that can be health care fraud, waste or abuse (FWA).

It is estimated that at least $30 billion spent by Americans on health care is lost to fraud each year (source: National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association).

Examples of fraud and abuse:

  • Using another person’s insurance card.
  • Adding someone to your health care plan who is not eligible.
  • Billing for services, medication or equipment that were not received.
  • Offering money to a member to use a specific provider.
  • Having a patient make weekly office visits when a monthly visit is enough.
  • Ordering the best medical equipment when a basic model works fine.
  • Prescribing more medicine than is necessary to treat a condition.

What members can do

  • Look at any bills or statements you receive to make sure the listed charges are correct. Contact your provider's billing office first if you are charged for services you did not receive or if you have questions about the bill. Report providers to us for services you did not receive or if you suspect fraud.
  • Respond to requests from a Hennepin Health fraud investigator.
  • Report any suspicious billing practices or fraudulent activities to us.
